Giving Online to the English Broadside Ballad Archive (EBBA)

The English Broadside Ballad Archive (EBBA) makes broadside ballads fully accessible as texts, art, music, and cultural records. We have digitized and made freely available ballads held around the world at the British Library (London), the Pepys Library (Cambridge), the National Library of Scotland (Edinburgh), the University of Glasgow, and the Henry E. Huntington Library (San Marino, CA)--and our archive continues to grow. We proudly provide advanced search functionality to make it possible for scholars and the general public to pursue specific topics of interest. EBBA also provides thousands of musical recordings that bring 17th-century songs to life, as well as facsimile transcriptions that make black-letter type legible to modern readers.

Your donation to EBBA will advance our work in all the following areas:

  • Preserving and providing access to 17th-century ephemeral texts beyond what is possible in traditional archives. We plan to digitize all of the approximately 11,000-12,000 extant broadside ballads from the period.
  • Creating full bibliographic records of each ballad, including fully searchable text transcriptions, researched publication dates, keywords, and cross-referencing with the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC).
  • Advancing digital scholarship through our innovative TEI/XML text encoding, database design, and our developing catalog of woodcut impressions.
  • Recording ballad tunes to increase understanding and appreciation of early modern popular music.
  • Promoting public and university education through our open access archive as well as the research opportunities we create for undergraduate and graduate students at UCSB and our partner institutions.
